Our next spot, near Ventura, was a small county park. Nothing special except it was our jumping off point for a day trip to Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park. The 1 1/2 hour ride over was bumpy and left me feeling a bit seasick but that dissipated quickly after we landed.
The man next to me on the boat said he has been here many times and due to all the recent rains this is the most verdant he has ever seen it! We deserve this since we endured all that rain!
On the island we went for a day hike with a naturalist. She set a rapid pace and since most were young they were able to keep up. We eventually decided to hang back and hike at our own pace. Her pace left little time for stopping to smell the roses and take pictures. I felt like all I was doing was watching my feet so I didn't trip! There is no water or facilities on the island, so we were also carrying layers of clothes, water and food.
There were a lot of birds, wildflowers blooming, and small streams and waterfalls. Gorgeous!
The island was covered with these Tree Coreopsis. This was about 6 feet tall!
Seals said goodbye to us as we were leaving the harbor for the return trip. We will be back some day. Luckily, the return trip was less bumpy, and we even saw a whale and a super pod of dolphins!
Leaving the next day, we stopped for gas and groceries. I drove our rental car while Denny followed in the RV. He ended up 2 cars back and when I turned on the freeway I saw him sail by the entrance and pull over. So I went to the next exit and turned around to find him. You are probably thinking, why didn't you just call him? Well, he refuses to carry a cell phone! He also refuses to pull a car which is why we have a rental and are driving separately! When I got back, of course he wasn't there. So hoping he had found and gotten on the freeway, I got on and sped for 10-15 minutes trying to catch up. Just as I was deciding that he hadn't got on, I saw him. As you can imagine, there was a lot of profanity laced mumbling going on in my car. Maybe next year he'll pull a car or get a cell phone. Hahaha, right!
