So far, this year's trip has not been very interesting. The big story
has been the weather. As with much of the U.S., the temperature ranges
have been dramatic. Lows in the teens at times and also in the 60s.
Highs have ranged from low 30s to low 80s. Luckily, most of the time has
been in the mid ranges. Too cold for shorts or sunbathing but perfect
for hiking.
We arrived at a much anticipated park just south of
Houston (Brazos Bend) with more bad weather forecasted. It was pretty
chilly, and we spent one entire day in the camper due to on and off rain.
As usual, I spent the day sewing, knitting and reading. Denny spent the
day napping, watching old westerns and complaining about the weather!
Luckily,
our last day at Brazos Bend was beautiful. This park has it all:
several lakes with islands covered in water birds, alligators, lots of
vultures, an observatory, and many hiking trails and geocaches.

Unfortunately, since hurricane Harvey in 2017 a lot of feral pigs have also taken up residence. Although we didn't see any, we saw a lot of damage done by their digging.
Next we moved on to Goose Island State Park where the weather has been perfect. We have a spot right on the water, and we can sit outside. This is what we have been waiting for!

The "Big Tree" said to be the largest Live Oak in Texas and estimated to be between 1000 and 2000 years old. Note the crutches holding up some of the branches.

Great Blue Heron - I love his face! And look at those feet!

Fish cleaning station. The pelicans arrive when they start gutting the fish and beg for the remains which are freely given.

We walked by the winter breeding grounds of whooping cranes. I wished we could have gotten closer! |

Great photos you two! Love it all, especially the big tree.
